Sea shipping has always been the most economically advantageous way to transport goods from China to Europe, taking about a month. However, since May 2024, the cost of shipping a container has increased from $3,000 to $9,000. This is due to attacks by Iran-backed Houthis on vessels in the strategic strait between the Red Sea and the Arabian Sea. Despite the Houthis claiming to target only the ships of countries supporting Israel's military actions against Hamas, Chinese exporters and manufacturers have faced a sharp increase in insurance rates and shipping costs through this strait.

Logistics Problems in the Strategic Strait

The Bab-el-Mandeb Strait is a crucial maritime chokepoint, connecting the Red Sea to the Gulf of Aden and the Arabian Sea. Disruptions in this area have severe implications for global trade. The Houthis' attacks on vessels passing through this strait have caused significant delays and increased costs for shipping companies. These attacks have led to several logistical problems:

Increased Insurance Rates: The risk associated with shipping through the Bab-el-Mandeb Strait has surged, leading insurers to raise their premiums. This additional cost is inevitably passed on to manufacturers and consumers.

Rerouting of Ships: To avoid the high-risk area, some shipping companies have opted to reroute their vessels around the Cape of Good Hope. This alternative route significantly increases the transit time and costs.

Port Congestion: The delays and increased scrutiny at ports due to the heightened risk have caused congestion, further disrupting the supply chain.

Security Measures: Enhanced security measures, including armed escorts and increased surveillance, have been implemented. These measures add to the overall cost and complexity of shipping operations.

The cost of shipping a container has more than doubled, leading to a significant increase in the final product prices. These items have various sizes and weights, which adds complexity to their storage and transportation.

Large and heavy items, such as pallet trucks, electric forklifts and lifting tables, require higher costs for transportation and storage. Smaller but also heavy devices, such as manual and electric hoists, clamps, winches, hevers and jacks, face the same logistical challenges. The increase in insurance rates and the need for alternative routes add additional expenses.
